It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood. (My oldest sister's birthday.) Deer in the yard, a pair of Loons with two little ones calling on the lake, Blue Heron fishing near the dock, and Rose Breasted Grosbeaks at the bird feeder. Aah the north woods.
Spent a couple hours yesterday afternoon pulling all the bait boxes, and bags out of the boat. What a hodgepodge mess. Spent quite a bit of time rebagging, sorting and repacking. Then it was back in the compartments hopefully with rhyme and reason so I can find what I need. Way too much stuff. Need to spend some time tomorrow going through baits and sorting them into seasonal patterns. That way, I can carry about a third ot the stuff and actually know where to find most of it.
Came across a pretty neat web site Animated Knots by Grog . I was looking for directions on how to tie a loop knot so when I throw topwater I'll be able to get the most out of the bait. Reading some related articles about topwatering smallies and the loop knot is always mentioned. They also talk about making sure you get that bait out there as far as possible. To do that, while maintaining contact with the bait for action and hookset you need to use a super line. Most recommend that you use a mono leader to help with buoyancy, and at the same time the leader acts a shock absorber when that big fish hits. Fireline Crystal was a super line I talked about earlier in the month, and it's mentioned in the articles as a good choice for your topwater line. For a rod, the articles recommend a short five and a half foot pistol grip type rod in a medium light to medium action. Your casting accuracy is maximized and the softer rod gives your bait the best action. Nothing like topwater fishing to get the excitement level maxed out.
Well so much for Verlander's run of things with the Tigers. From a no hitter to a last night eleven to one loss. Don't want to rag on him because sometimes you're hot and sometimes your knot. Hopefully with my new loop knot we can put up some good numbers on Manistee.
Get your boats ready, retie those rods, make sure you bring any ad money you have collected and throw your proof of insurance for your boat in the truck to give to Dennis.
See you Sunday at the Stronach launch by 6:00 am. Good day and good luck.
P.S.
I am going to break the blog at this point. It's been one month already. I'll add a link at the top of the blog page so if you want to get back to this month's blog you can. Sunday's blog will obviously be late or maybe I'll just wait till Monday. We'll see how much energy I have Sunday night.

Sitting here looking out at the lake. A pontoon just pulled up. A bunch of folks are bobber fishing right off the end of my dock. Not uncommon, but yesterday I was at Manistee, and my wife calls, and says there is a guy and gal with kayaks on our beach. He's on our dock fishing and she is on the front yard with a picnic spread out. Kind of strange and a tad bit bold. My wife was a little nervous about what, if anything, she should do. I told her to just go outside. With my truck gone it looked like no one was home. She did and engaged the couple in conversation. They said, "They wouldn't leave any trash." Again very strange. They said they had their own place on the lake, and so I'm now wondering why picnic then in my front yard? Oh well. My wife said, after she came out and talked to them, they decided to leave shortly thereafter.
Yesterday I said that today we should talk about Mike Iaconelli and ESPN's ESPYS' awards. Mike is coming off a phenomenal season in 2006 where he won the coveted Elite Series Angler of the Year. If you go to the ESPYS site via the hot link above, you can vote for Mike under his category of "Best Outdoor Athlete." He's up against an 18 year old girl mountain climber who has climbed the "seven summits" (the highest mountain on each continent), an older mountain climber Ian McKeever who has climbed six of the highest mountains on each continents and is presently climbing Denali, musher Lance Mackey who won back to back Iditarods, and Dean Karnazes who ran 50 marathons in 50 days in all 50 states from September through November of 2006. Fifty marathons in fifty days is insane. I use to jog and ran the Chicago Marathon, which I still feel is one of my biggest accomplishments, but to run 50 in 50 days is unbelievable! I still voted for Mike though. You can vote up to and through July 7th.
If you go to Mike's web site by clicking the hot link above he has a bunch of very good articles he wrote. I just finished reading the one on preparing for a tournament. I thought it was very good and have incorporated a couple of his points into my memory bank for the next prefishing trip.
Got cold here in the north country last night. Down into the low 40s. Beautiful day today. Just went out and talked to the bobber fisher ladies on the pontoon boat as I was changing the sprinklers. They said they hadn't even caught a bluegill yet.
This cold is going to put the fish down for a few days. Hopefully though, all those smallies that went deep on Manistee will be coming up shallower to make Sunday's contest somewhat easier. Manistee can bite you in the butt when there are high skies and hot weather. Could be some goose eggs Sunday.
While I was checking the email this morning I got a flyer from Barlow"s Tackle . Ordered some spinnerbait building stuff from them a few years ago. They sent me a catalog and of course I had to order some secret baits. On their site, they have some links that are cool. I used the pro links to get to Iaconelli's site.
Well, too nice of a day to be sitting much longer on the computer. Going to go pull the boat out and get it ready for Sunday. Have a great day!

Forgot that last night when Don and Darlene came over for dinner that Don brought me a green sheet of paper that has the changes to the 2007 fishing regulations effective June 28, today. The changes are focused on controlling the spread of viral hemorrhagic septicemia, VHS. These changes were enacted under a Public Act, PA 451. In Michigan, the laws are referred as Public Acts. Even though these changes were enacted I didn't read any where if there was any teeth behind them. What happens if you don't empty your livewell and bilge water? Are they going to ticket you? I hope they are aggressive with it, but with all the cut backs there really aren't many people out there working to protect our natural resources. Make sure those livewells and bilge areas are empty and even go beyond that when we fish connected waters like Manistee Lake. You should be using hot water with a third of a cup of bleach per 5 gallons to also rinse livewells and bilge areas. This will kill viruses and larvae of the Zebra Muscles. Another aspect of the regs refers to transfer of fish or the release of fish. You can't transport fish you caught unless their dead and you cannot release fish that you caught in one lake into another. They talk about movement of fish and bait fish within the VHSv Positive Management Areas, but it's pretty much all of Michigan waters. You can release fish if it can "freely move between the original location of capture and the location of release." If you haven't made yourself a resource for others concerning VHS make sure you take the time to do some reading. There is a button on the Tear Drop main page that should get you started. If you fish you need to do your part to make sure we all can continue to fish.
Lots of eagle information today on the news. Eagles came off the endangered species list today. If you fish Manistee you should see eagles. I saw two yesterday, one mature bird and an immature one (without the white head and tail feathers). First thing I saw today as I was putting the boat in was the mature bird soaring above the lake.
Yes I did go back to Manistee today. It didn't start out well, however. Got there and put the boat in at Penny's Park. It's weed choked and shallow so I trolling motored my way out to deep water. Before I started the big motor, I threw some topwater over the shallow weedy flat. Had two splashes, saw one nice fish hit my bait but not get hooked. Hooked one for about 5 cranks of the reel handle, and caught one that was probably a little shy of 14 inches. Didn't measure it because I was negotiating around some pilings and the wind was making things quite difficult. I was then ready to go hit the channel to the big lake. Turned the key and the engine light came on and the alarm went off. Great!! Messed around and trolling motored around some more, but each time I tried the big motor the same thing happened. So... back to the ramp, and I put it on the trailer. Got on the phone and called Ted. Ted has a marine repair in Coopersville called TLC Marine. I told him that I was having problems and one of the things I noticed was the bulb on the gas line wouldn't pump up. You would squeeze it and it would just stay flat. He asked if I had checked the gas line to make sure it wasn't kinked, of course I hadn't. . He also said that the problem might be. in the intake piece that is in the gas tank There is a hose connector that has a little anti siphoning device in it. He said that in stern drives these things are required, but you don't have to have them in outboards, but many gas tank pick ups have them. He said you can take a little punch and pop them out. If they get stuck or jammed up with a little piece of something it can restrict the gas flow. The engine computer notices a change in the vacuum pressure and it will set your engine buzzer/alarm going. I've had problems with this type of thing happening intermittently now for a year or more, so I am planning to pull my gas pickups out of the tanks and pop the spring, clip and little anti-siphoning ball out of the line. That's if mine has them in it. Ted had some good info. After talking with him, I stopped the truck and checked the line for kinks and it was fine. However, I had gotten gas yesterday and switched the tanks over so, I switch them back and tried pumping the bulb again. This time I could feel the gas pulling and the bulb hardening. Well, I thought I'd better put it back in and try it. t ran, so I was off to the channel. I fished up one side and down the other. I caught a walleye down by the Coast Guard Station on a spinnerbait, and caught one short smallie pitching at moored boats.
I went down and into the man made cove near the Coast Guard Station and fished it even though they now have a sign that says "No Fishing." The new condo owners must not like people fishing around their boats. As I entered the area, a resident came out and started talking to me about the fish he had caught out in front of his place. I asked him about the sign, and he just waved me off saying that no one would hassle me about it. I don't believe that the Riparian Rights legislation that came out of a suit in Michigan allows the owners to make the water, which is connected to state water, off limits. There has been a similar discussion about this kind of situation on the Great Lakes Bass Forum where anglers were complaining about people in marinas harassing them. I guess cities can pass ordinances, but barring that, I don't believe they can band you from public water. That's what public water is or means, right? A long story short, I didn't catch anything in there anyway. The wind was so bad even in that little protected cove that if I faced into the wind it would blow my hat off. Fishing the channel was about the only option today. Manistee Lake was white cappin'. Would have been a very tough tournament day today. Lets hope for less wind Sunday. Manistee is the only lake that the Tear Drop has canceled a tournament on. When it blows on that lake there doesn't seem to be any place to hide. It can get wicked. Tomorrow we have to talk about Ike and the ESPYs

Went up to the "Dublin General Store." for some groceries yesterday. Dublin Store is an oddity in that it is truly in the middle of no place and no where. All of a sudden though, you find yourself in front of a 40 ft. meat counter that is all homemade jerky. They have every kind of jerky you can think of and then a couple more. They have a meat cooler almost as long as the jerky counter and their meat is cut and ground right in the store. They have homemade hot dogs, a variety of homemade specialty brats like potato bacon, chili cheese, sauerkraut, and at least 5-10 other "flavors" of brats. They have smoked cheese, hot deli items, and bakery goods. They also have a hardware section that has everything and anything. You need help fixing something, they got the part and usually always have an answer to your how to questions. They just remodeled their coolers and front entry. We often marvel at how their prices are competitive and for some things cheaper than than the big box stores at home. If you get up in the Irons, MI area which is roughly west of M37, just south of Wellston on M55 you gotta stop.
Well, making this post late. In fact, I only have 21 more minutes to get it in for the 27th. I got over to Manistee and knowing I had promised to report on the prefishing trip I felt a little pressure to catch some fish. Things were very slow and didn't get the first keeper fish until about 10:30. It was a largemouth that came on a topwater bait. Didn't catch the next keeper until another smallie decided to hit a tube along a wall. I then decided to go where no one has ever gone before. Not really, but just got caught up in the Star Trek verbiage. It was a spot I had never practiced before though, and ended up catching my biggest fish of the day and one other keeper there. The big fish wasn't a giant, but did measure seventeen and a half inches. It then heated up and I caught several other just fourteen inch fish. Got off the water at 4:00. Saw three Tear Drop boats at the Stronach Ramp. Also saw two bald eagles that I got some good video of. Took both my cameras, but fishing by myself makes it kind of hard to get fish pictures. Besides if I put them in the blog I have to camouflage the background.
Did make a stop for ice-cream at "House of Flavors." They have some of the best ice-cream and I usually get the butter pecan with hot fudge and hot caramel with pecans sprinkled heavily on top. There is a House of Flavors in Manistee that you can dock in the channel and run up to get food or ice cream. There is another HOF in Ludington, downtown right on Main Street just before it runs into Lake Michigan. Got to plug those Tear Drop sponsors.
Spent a nice night having "State Team Don" and Darlene over for burgers. By the way, his trip to the doctor for the skin cancer went well! Keep after him to wear the sun screen. They want him to stay out of the sun, but golfing and fishing take place out doors and he says he's playing through.
Two more minutes to go before midnight and I'm planning another 5:00 am wake up for a trip back to Manistee to check some more water. Good night or good morning!

Ah, technology! It still amazes me what you can do today with a tablet size piece of hardware. As a kid, I can remember that a transistor radio was a biggy. Now you can read just about anything, talk to whoever you want, play bridge with people in Australia, buy whatever meets your fancy, all while sitting up in the north woods where not too long ago they only could receive maybe two TV stations and those were fuzzy. Amazes me! Right now I'm using my iPod as a traveling hard drive so I can update the blog and put up the Manistee results from the cabin. I use to use a little thumb drive but that has limited capacity and the iPod is 30 gigs which is way more memory that probably the first 4 computers I had combined. Boggles the mind that they can put that much into a piece of hardware smaller than a pack of playing cards.
Got up to the cabin last night and have to work around here for a day and then plan on going to Manistee prefishing tomorrow.
Talked to Don and Hoogy already this morning so I guess everything is right with the world. I always enjoy hearing from them. Don did say he's getting some more skin cancer cut off today. PLEASE USE SUN SCREEN!! Keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
Haven't checked on the fires in Tahoe, CA yet today. They will probably have something on the news at noon. My son lives at the north end of the lake and the fires are in the south.
Tahoe is considered a "high desert" and rarely gets any rain in the summer. Moisture content has to come from the snow melt and for the last few years that hasn't been what it should be. Hopefully Mother Nature will conjure up something and either the winds will die down or they get a chance rain.
If you ever get a chance to vacation in Tahoe it is certainly a scenic paradise. The lake area itself is a picture postcard where ever you're at. You can drive northeast over the pass to Reno in 40 minutes and be in the desert. You can drive west and be in Sacramento's palm trees in two hours or San Francisco in three hours. A week goes by fast there.
If you haven't heard, KVD, that is Mr. Kevin "Unbelievable" Van Dam, won another tournament down on Grand Lake in Oklahoma. That 100K puts him at about two and a half million dollars! The all time money winner in bass fishing history! It also moves him into the lead for Angler of the Year. This is his second win on this year's tour and both wins he credits to a crankbait pattern. There are several sites that have the story, but you can link to one story on a new site I found called "Bass N Edge."
Can't be spending too much time on the computer today. Need to mow the grass and it's already in the mid 80s, and it won't be getting any cooler.
I did find another site that you all need to put on your significant other's computer. It's "Bass Gifts.com." They have some things in the bass theme that I haven't seen before. They even have a bass putter. Don's got to get one of those! Well I'm outta here. I'll be posting the next blog bit late tomorrow after I get back from prefishing Manistee. I'll let you know in the blog how I did.

Hot, sticky, wish I had central air, July/August pre-dog day Monday. Not complaining, because it's still better looking out at green leaves than piles of dirty snow. Worked a bunch of hours putting together an iMovie of the race we went to Saturday. Came together well, but when I burned the DVD and then checked it, there were parts that had inexplicably lost their sound. Worked well into the wee hours of the morning trying to find the glitch. Who knows why it did what it did. Couldn't see anything wrong with the initial piece so I downloaded it to my camera and reentered it as a new iMovie and burned the DVD. This time I had sound!
If you are a Mac user, and haven't tried iMovie, well you have missed the boat. If you use a PC(BM) well, too bad. The iMovie program allows you to easily input digital video, still pictures, music, etc. You then are given a myriad of tools to create editorial splendor. If anyone is interested, I have a couple old Tear Drop DVDs from a few years back. I also have a salmon fishing DVD of my last year's trip out of Manistee with Capt. Rico. I could mail you one if you would like to see one.
I have been reading with interest about the big FLW bass fishing event in Detroit coming up this July. It starts July 12th with a 6:30 take off out of Elizabeth Park . I have fished Erie and St. Clair from the launch at Elizabeth Park. The ramp there is at the south end of the Detroit River almost to the mouth of Lake Erie. It's really not all that far from the Cabellas in Dundee. The weigh in Thursday and Friday is at 3:00 at Elizabeth Park. The weigh in Saturday and Sunday is at Cobo Center. Looks like the City of Detroit is really getting behind the event and for a full schedule click on the link. I know I am seriously considering going down. I would love to be one of the boats chasing around following the pros like you see on tv. I would be sure to have the GPS fired up and take advantage of their hot spots. Who wants to go?
By now you know about the daily walk/runs so I'll try not to belabor that daily ritual. While out today, I did once again, hear discussion on a couple of products that look like good buys. One is called Loc-R-Bar . It's a device that you use to lock down the lids on your boat. Most boats do have locks, but this just adds one more measure of security. In a rod locker alone, you could easily have several thousand dollars worth of rods and reels. Most anglers take their rods in to the motel at night, but when you stop to eat those tools are vulnerable. Some anglers do travel with a cover on. I use to with my first boat. However, traveling with a cover on, creates marks on your boat. Some of the new travel covers do a better job but all that wind buffeting results in mars in your fiberglass.
Another product discussed was a Keel Guard. I think you all have seen keel guards and may have one. However, at the link above you'll find skeg guards, and what they call "Scuff busters." These Scuff Busters protect your hull where your strap connects from the winch. These products from Keel Guard look like they could really save your butt those times when you do something , well stupid.
Prefishing week for the Manistee tournament. I am going to get up there on at least Wednesday and Thursday. Maybe I'll see you on the water. Have a nice day.

Good morning! Went to a wedding Friday. A couple I met through my kids, Mike and Lynn were married. Mike is one of those young men you hope your own son grows up to be like. He's a hard worker and is very knowledgeable when it comes to cars. He has become my mechanic. He works at a local repair shop and works on my vehicles when they need it. Unfortunately I keep him pretty busy. The wedding was very nice, but the honeymoon was postponed a week so that he could race Saturday, last night. I'm not really sure that's why they decided not to go on their honeymoon right away. It might of been a reservation problem, because I know they're heading to Vegas next Friday. In any case, my wife and I found ourselves in the bleachers of the Hudsonville Fair Grounds, watching what they call "West Michigan Off Road Racing." Can't say I've ever been a big race car fan. I have, however, gotten into watching NASCAR simply because it has become so popular. I can then appear knowledgeable about it with my buddies. I guess because of my lack of mechanical ability I have never gotten the car bug. I do know where the gas and air goes, but that's about it. Any ways, the racing was loud and full of action. There were several roll overs and the cross country racing is a kind of stock car demolition race. Many of the cars ended their night badly mangled and smoking. Mike and his brother Steve did quite well and I was impressed with their driving skills. Mike got spun around at one point and jumped right back in the race driving in reverse. I think he could have won the thing if he hadn't had some bad luck in chain reaction crashes.

This is a shot of Mike and a buddy working on his car to get it ready for his second race after his first heat. Mike's the guy in the middle.
While we're on a entertainment track, we might as well throw in a link to "You Tube." On You Tube you can find just about anything. This link just so happens to be one on the lake I have been talking and dreaming about, Lake Fork, in Texas. Like I said though, you can find about anything from comedic clips to guitar lessons. I simply typed bass fishing into the search box and probably 50 clips popped up. I have never uploaded anything, but I assume with its popularity that it can't be too complicated. Maybe we'll have to throw a Tear Drop clip on there some day.
I have been reading about the new Berkley Fireline Crystal on the fishing forums and have discussed it with a couple of guys that I know that have tried it. All the written and oral reports that I have heard have been very positive. The May/June FLW magazine did a write up and they said Al Lindner was one of the first to try out the line and his last quote after raving about it was, "They've hit a home run with it." They claim it to be extremely tough, and not as invisible as fluorocarbon, but "nearly translucent." It was the Overall Best of Show at the 2006 ICAST show and Best in Class in the line category. It is suppose to really lie on a spinning reel well. It looks to cost about $15 for a 125 yd. spool at FishUSA.com .

Got up this morning and dialed in ESPN2 to watch the Bassmaster, Elite Series on Clarks Hill. Mike McClelland beat Chris Hill by just ounces. Another thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. It can really be tough in fishing, or in any sport, to get so close to your goal only to have things go wrong, allowing your dream to slip ever so slowly through your fingers. I don't mean to dredge up old wounds, but a picture I took of Dennis and Don in last years State Championship is usually the first thing I think of when I see another close race where a leader has things go awry and the prize vaporizes as he or she fights to gather it in. Last year's Saginaw B.A.S.S State Championship found Dennis in second place after having a great first day. Day two, he heads to his spot only to find two guys have moved in on him. He does what he has to do and continues to fish. He then has a big one, the one he needs, hit his spinnerbait. The wire in the spinnerbait breaks. That's right, the wire breaks. That never happens, but it did and Dennis ended up missing the State Team by one ounce, one measly little couple of drops of water, one crummy ounce. Don, on the other hand, doesn't prefish the river at all figuring that the tourney would almost certainly come from a big bag off the Bay. However, when the winds blew up wicked and the bay was closed, Don draws a local that has fished the river regularly. Lives just up the bluff from the river and fished it every day. They both catch a limit that puts Don in the hunt, but he needs a good day 2. He heads out on day two and boats another decent limit and beats out Dennis, that's right by 1 ounce, to make the State Team. This picture says it all.

Dennis I don't mean to dredge up old wounds, but man you got robbed. Not to take anything away from Don, but he got lucky and well Dennis, breaking a wire on a spinnerbait, well that ain't lucky.
For all the Tear Drop anglers who read the blog, Dennis wanted me... to probably not bring up the State Tournament, but to remind everyone that hasn't brought their proof of insurance in yet to be sure they have it at the Manistee event. If you have a scanner and want to scan and send him a copy that will work too.
Pushed on the 4 miler yesterday and ran just shy of a mile without any cardiac infarction. I used to jog a lot and wouldn't even consider going out unless I could run at least 4 miles. That was back a few years. I still consider my Chicago Marathon excursion to be one of my greatest accomplishments. Running 26 miles is a long way. Did a few triathlons as well, and they test your metal too, but the marathon couples the physical and mental aspects with more intensity than most other athletic endeavors. Always mention the walk/run because it puts pressure on me to continue, and I need to. It is also the time of the day when I listen to a podcast. Yesterday it was a half hour of "Bass Feed" and the remainder of the time was listening to NPR, "Talk of the Nation." "Bass Feed" featured an interview with Tom Redington a Lake Fork Texas guide. Man, the more I hear about Lake Fork, the more I would love to take a week and go down. I know Dennis is going to Lake Toho again this winter and from all accounts that too is a great bass fishing vacation. Right now though I would lean toward Lake Fork in terms of big fish. Fork's 16 to 24 inch slot limit means there are a lot of big fish swimming that lake. Don't want to beat a dead horse or get a little too OCD on swim baits, but Tom Redington talks about how they are now using them on Lake Fork for big ones.
Was doing some reading in the FLW magazine and saw they did a livewell article. Mentioned livewell care tips in the blog a few days ago . The article also emphasized using 2 oz. of bleach for every five gallons of livewell water to kill viruses and zebra muscle larvae while disinfecting the livewell. You have to do what you can to help ensure you don't contribute to delayed mortality. Another thing they mentioned is that you not only need to aerate your live wells constantly when it's hot, but it's important to get rid of toxic wastes like ammonia your fish excrete. You should be draining your livewell at least halfway, and refilling it, at least once and preferably twice during an 8 hour tournament. Once more thing they recommend is that you add non-iodized salt, like epson salt, 1/3 cup per 5 gallons, and if you choose to add other additives like Rejuvenate or Please Release Me you can do that too. Adding ice: you should be adding ice to your livewell when the surface water rises above 75 degrees. The recommended live well temperature, when the surface water is 79 should be 77, 81 surface- 78 livewell, 83 surface-79 livewell, 85 surface- 80 livewell. You can see that you don't want to lower the livewell temp too much. Taking good care of our fish must be a priority. One new piece of info in the article was a section on "Livewell Myths." They stated that many people think running your livewell pumps will drain your cranking battery. They said, not true. Livewell pumps draw only 1.5 to 3 amps. Another myth they debunked was that chlorine in frozen water will kill fish. Again not true. Most chlorine comes out when you freeze the water. Another debunked myth was that commercial livewell additives add oxygen to the water, which isn't true. The last thing they mentioned again was that you should never use peroxide thinking it will add oxygen or use it to disinfect the livewell. Peroxide damages a fish's gills.
Take care and remember one of my favorite quotes, "Not in the clamor of the crowded streets, nor in the shouts and plaudits of the throng, but within oneself lies victory and defeat." With that in mind you can always make today and every day a better one!

Got up with the intention of heading out for my daily 4 miler, but as usual I got hung up on the computer. There has been a thread on greatlakesbass.com
concerning the Walpole Island Reservation license. If you have fished St. Clair, you know that you are probably going to buy a Canadian license and a Walpole license. You can order these licenses online from a source I have used several times, Lakeside Fishing Shop . As I was saying, Dave, the Reel Man, joined the thread on GLB and posted a map that I have seen before of St. Clair that is fabulous! The map allows you to move around on the lake and zoom in to areas, and as you do, your GPS position, of your cursor, is displayed. You can copy and transfer the point, so when you hit the water, you should be pretty darn close to where you want to go.
The map comes from Marine Cruiser . At this time, it appears the only map available on their site is Lake St. Clair. However, the site says they're "Under Construction." So,we will all have to keep checking back, because this is a way too cool mapping idea that I would love to have for other lakes.
The other day I talked a little about swim baits and how they are said to be the next big thing in bass baits. I came across a pretty good video for the computer. I believe the video, when it initially opened, showed a "Quick Time" symbol. This means you have to be sure your computer has a copy of Quick Time downloaded to it. You can get a free download of Quick Time from Apple. The video ( It takes a couple of minutes to load so be patient. ) has an FLW Pro, Bubba Tosh, at a bass tank giving a seminar on swim baits. I'm listening and watching some of it again as I'm typing right now. He does a pretty good job going over the whole swim bait arsenal. I think it's worth listening too even though it's about California big bass lakes. He does say, that these swim baits catch big fish in any body of water where big fish swim. A number of these California lakes that have these huge bass, have trout planted in them regularly. Hmm... do we have trout in some of our big lake connected waters? Well this may be a real good bait to start trying on some of our big smallmouth waters like GT Bay, Erie or St.Clair.
While I was surfing the net the other day looking at the Bear Paw Baits site I noticed the Bass Bytes reference and went from there to find the Bubba's swim bait video. I also found a whole stock pile of fishing videos for the computer that you can access at Western Bass TV . This is really a gold mine of information that is right there at you keyboard fingertips. Don't blame me though if your boss rips you a new one for watching bass fishing all the time at work now.
The weekend is almost here. Get the fans ready for next week though, because we are suppose to be getting some of the hottest weather of the summer coming our way Monday and Tuesday. Still beats shoveling snow! Have a great day!

During my 4 miler yesterday I listened to another episode of "Bass Feed." It was pretty interesting. As I have mentioned before, "Bass Feed" is the name of a podcast that I download off of iTunes for free. The show yesterday was about a charity tournament on Sam Rayburn in Texas. It's a Ronald McDonald House big bass charity. A guy by the name of Sealy has been putting them on now for over 20 years and this event has grown to where they now give away a guaranteed $560,000 and that guarantee isn't based on a number of boats. They give all of it away. They give away several boats. The biggest bass gets a fully rigged Triton with a 225 on it, plus a Hummer, plus a Bad Boy Buggy, which is a souped up four wheeler. Each hour they pay 12 places starting with first place getting $1,000 and dropping to twelfth which receives $200. If you weigh a fish that hits 3, 4, or 5 pounds exactly you win a boat. They have concerts and it has turned in to a 3 day party. Sounds like a great time! Here's the link to what they call Sam Rayburn's McDonalds' Big Bass Splash Big Bass Splash. The bad news is this tournament has already taken place. The good news is there are others that haven't. In fact, there is a similar event on Lake Fork in Texas with a total prize purse of $400,000. Same type of big bass event. On Lake Fork however, they have a 16 inch to 24 inch slot limit. That means most of the hourly fish weighed are 16 inches or less. These sound like they would be a blast to fish. Get a bunch of buddies together and head down with a couple of boats. You can fish as many as you want to out of a single boat. Lake Fork is a trophy managed lake. The Texas DNR has a program going that hopes to use the big bass from their state managed ShareLunker program to raise a world record bass. Always wanted to go down and fish Lake Fork. This event would and could be the catalyst for a road trip. Here is the web site that list all of the Big Bass Splash events.
While listening to the podcast about the Big Bass Splash they had a rep from Bear Paw. Bear Paw is a small bait company that makes hand poured plastics. I'll tell you what, they have some interesting baits and when that retirement check comes I think I going to sneak an order in to give some a try. Here's the link to Bear Paw Baits .
Getting psyched up for the next Tear Drop event on Manistee. Have a wedding Friday and a birthday get together, shh it's a surprise, on Sunday then I'm heading up to the cabin for several days of prefishing on Manistee.

This morning I was checking the iTunes Store for new podcasts. If you haven't downloaded iTunes you should. Lots of free stuff available. You can access iTunes through the Apple site. Once there, you will need to download iTunes which is free. The link provides downloads for Windows and Mac. The site will tell you what system requirements are necessary in order to download. Once you do, you can then go to the Apple Store. At the store, you can use the left hand menu and select podcasts. Next use the menu to select the category your interested in, and there are many. I use the search tool in the upper right hand corner to type in "Bass Fishing" and it will then list a number of related podcasts. All of these are free, and I use them all the time with my iPod. I subscribed today to a new one I found called, "Black Water Bassin." I also have a number of other subscriptions for a variety of podcasts. I have a number of NPR shows, some comedy shows, some science and education shows and a number of others that I listen to. If you subscribe to a particular show, they automatically send you podcasts as they are made. Most have new shows weekly. You have the choice then of downloading them or not. They take very little room and you can listen to them on your computer, burn them to a CD, or listen to them in the car on your iPod by using an FM transmitter which they sell all over. There are also many podcasts that are video podcasts which are also free. Many of video podcasts are of the "How To" type. These videos teach you computer skills, computer applications, teach you Spanish, show you cooking recipes, literally hundreds if not thousands of podcasts available and again for FREE.
Was watching the Outdoor Channel and they were talking about fish care. Did a little research on the net and found a couple articles that had some good information. One is called CPR For Fish . Another site I found is simple called "Proper Catch and Release". Lots of good information and a very good refresher as we come in to the hot part of the summer. Here are, what I guess, might be called bulleted points. If water temperatures exceed 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, add an eight pound block of ice (4 lbs. to each side of the livewell) every 4 hours.
Essential livewell additives: 1/3 cup of non-iodized salt per 5 gallons of water helps reduce stress. This way is much cheaper, safer and equally effective as commercial products. You do have to know how much your livewell hold so use a 5 gallon bucket once to fill it up. Some even say to draw a line with a magic marker so you know where half way is in order to put in the right amount of salt or commercial chemicals. I have and do use Please Release Me as many do. I am going to do some checking though for that non-iodized salt. When it's hot they say you should be running your aerators all the time and to change your water in the livewell every two hours or so to remove the contaminants that build up from the waste of the fish ammonia, co2, etc. They also say to keep in mind that 10 lbs. of fish in two gallons of water use up all the oxygen in 2 minutes! So don't get those fish out of your livewell at the weigh in unless you can get them on the scale right away.
I have talked to Don and others about this topic before and we both have heard that people have used hydrogen peroxide to clean out their livewells after a fishing outing. According to what I have read, hydrogen peroxide is very bad for fish. They recommend that you use the antibacterial soap to scrub out your livewell. They do say to be very sure to rinse it thoroughly. The info on VHS, LMBV, and zebra muscles, also say that you should use very hot water to rinse the livewell. Bottom line, take care of your fish, and if you catch one that bleeds a lot, practice selective harvest and have it for dinner.

Just got back from breakfast with JB. John spends a lot of time outdoors and is an avid walleye guy. He has a place down around Turtle Creek on Lake Erie. He said they caught all the walleye they wanted last week on spoons trolling. They tried some live bait, but found the spoons and artificials to be just as productive or even better. They caught pretty much cookie cutter fish, in what he figured was the 03 class, with the biggest going around 24 inches. John use to do some guide and TV work for Denny Guerink. Denny books trips to Russia for a variety of game species. If you click on his link check out the size of some of the bears they get over there. They also get some big red stags which are akin to our elk. That reminds me I have to get my elk application in. You have until July 15th. Here is the MDNR page link you need to if you want to get yours online. I like to get my fishing license online because you can print as many copies of it as you like. That way I can keep one in the truck, one in the boat, and one in my wallet. Covered on most fronts that way.
Getting a little disjointed because I'm playing poker on Poker Academy. I found the program at the Apple Store in Woodland Mall while my wife was buying her laptop a year or so ago, maybe two years now. I've played on several poker programs and this has the most realistic format for a "play money" online site. People play more realistically because it is very hard to accumulate more cash if you bet out of your head. In order to get what they call money, pax, you have to enter freerolls of up to 50 players. If you win a freeroll, you may get $40. Once you accumulate over $50 you can no longer play in freerolls and have to go in to a poker room or play other "cash" tournaments. I got the program for $20, but they get more for it now. We have a wireless router at home and probably four computers going almost 24/7. My wife and mother-in-law like "Pogo." I have played poker Pogo, but it's too easy to just get more money so people bet unrealistically. They do have a number of other games that are fun, if your in to that kind of thing to download your brain after work.
Saw last night that the 2008 schedule is out for the B.A.S.S. Elite Series . They have changed their format and vow to increase the TV coverage, which was pitiful during last year's Classic. There are a number of pros that are not too happy with the changes. It looks like they are catering more to a big TV audience. A NASCAR approach to bring in big money. The pros are going to be allowed to fish from their own branded boats. Again, a NASCAR approach that many of the pros have been wanting. Probably makes it harder for the little guy, but what's new.

Hey! Got an email from Ross M. and he wanted me to know that he wasn't a resident of Crystal Lake. I don't know where I got that from. Must of been the dock talk after the weigh in. When you catch a big sack like Ross did it creates discussion. I didn't recall seeing Ross at Portage so I guess I assumed, incorrectly, that he was just fishing that tournament. Ross lives in Holland and spends the weekends in the Traverse City area. Man, does that sound like the life. Two beautiful resort towns. Some guys have all the luck!
My son keeps hounding me, good naturedly, to leave a line between each paragraph. Going to start doing it in the articles but wait yet a bit on the blog.
It does require an extra html tag. Whenever you type in html for a web page you have to add all the tags along with the typing. You at home see the typing but as you upload to the server the server reads all the tags for text, color, hyperlinks, paragraph breaks, etc.
Called and talked to Don as he was waiting on the tee box at the Eldorado. He said that he came in third at the C.A.T.T. Tournament on Lake St. Clair. It was a small tournament with around 20 something boats. They took off from the same ramp as the NBAA tournament which paid $5,000 so Don said a lot of guys jumped tournaments to fish for the bigger money. They were interested in qualifying in the C.A.T.T. for their big tournament that gives away a boat. With 18.38 they took third and qualified. 18.4 was second and 21 something won it. In the NBAA, I also heard it took about 21 to win it. Don said they caught fish wherever they went. Canadian waters were still closed so that limited the waters.
Talked to my friend John, and he fished Erie for walleye last week. No real big fish, but he said they caught limits early every day. Going to have breakfast with him tomorrow morning so I should get more details then. Heard on GLB that East Bay was getting really good with plenty of fish eager to bite.
Went to the "Outdoorsman Pro Shop". Cruised and drank coffee and ate a donut from my favorite donut shop which is just a shop down in the little strip mall. Can't beat eating donuts and checking out fishing baits. Didn't pick up any baits. Did see a neat gizmo though. It zip ties on your net handle and then there is a piece that clips on your net. The two pieces are connected with a magnet so when you are scooping fish the clip holds the net up against the handle and when the weight of the fish is in the net the magnet pulls apart so the fish can fall to the bottom. Ten bucks is what they're getting for it. Gonna have to try it. Have to head back to get it once the retirement check comes. This getting paid once a month bites.

Well I finally did it. Lost my cool and responded inappropriately to an email. I usually handle rude, arrogant people without getting too upset. However, this time for whatever reason, I didn't. So after settling down a bit, I'd like to step up and apologize for a crass remark that was made in reply to, "Where's the stats and why don't you spend your time doing them rather than the working on the blog."
Well.... I did explain in the blog that the stats were in a holding pattern. (Note the end of the June 16th entry.) I like everyone else am interested in seeing where we fell at Crystal and where we're at in the Classic Standings. However, I do understand and try and be patient when there are circumstances that are out of the norm that hold things up. Do I get testy with Dennis because the club's computer broke down requiring him to use his personal computer: the computer Roseann uses for her college class work, and that she took out of town until Sunday night? Nope, because I know how much work Dennis does just so all of us can enjoy some friendly competition and even win some money. No one in the Tear Drop gets a dime for the work they do. Some of us have been doing the leg work for literally decades. Typically a few people do most of the work in many nonprofit organizations and so it goes in the Tear Drop. I no longer do the stats or help much at the weigh ins and I don't get a dime for the web page, although Dennis did pay some of the expenses that the site incurred this year ( first time ever though). From my end, there are domain costs, hosting costs, and the cost for an FTP program like Fetch, which is necessary to upload material to the host. Just Fetch costs about $25 for each machine and I have it on three in order to be able to work on the site from home, or up north, or on the road. I don't need anyone feeling sorry for me, but I do take offense to people taking pot shots. It boils down to if you don't want to read what's on the site don't. I do this for enjoyment and the satisfaction that it brings from knowing some people like it. Dennis knows we are all interested in the standings and usually has the info. the night of the tournament. This time it took a week, but there were extenuating circumstances.
I dislike forums and blogs when they turn negative like this is right now, so after this vent, I'll try very hard to ignore the diatribe.
Do I feel better now? Getting things out on the blog is a bit cathartic, but I would have preferred not to have lost my cool to begin with.
I'll call Fowler and see how he did on St. Clair. Then I'll run down to the "Outdoorsman Pro Shop" and fraternize with Bill and Grayson and see if they got any hot new baits in. Manistee is coming up!! Now I'm feeling better, plus when you get as old as I am you won't remember what's happened long any way. What were we talking about?? Oh, yea the standings are up on the web page under the "Rules and Info" button.

Happy Father's Day!
Getting bits and pieces from the BFL up on Burt and Mullet. Will have to wait till tonight or tomorrow for the traffic on GLB to hear how it all went down. Still haven't heard from Fowler on how he did on St. Clair yesterday.
Took the grand daughter and her friend to the Holland Aquatic Center. They had an good time and we stopped to eat afterward. Not much happening otherwise.
Did a little surfing and shopping on the net. I was looking on one of the sites I got from my techy nephew. It's called West Coast Mall . One of the things I am thinking of ordering is 0751483 Long Neck Diagonal Cutters. I have always heard that when you hook a fish deep, that you should just cut the line and the hook will rust out. I have never believed that that would actually happen. I caught a bass early one season that had a piece of line with a hook still on it coming out of its anus. I helped it along because the hook would have never made it out naturally. This was a tiny ice fishing hook and it wasn't the least bit rusted or deteriorated in any way. The bigger bass hooks would even be tougher to rust out, if it truly ever happens. So..... I always cut the barb on any gut hooked fish. I can usually get both pieces out then or at least one of the pieces so not so much of the hook remains in the fish. The side cutters from West Coast are unique in that they have a very long neck to reach down into the gullet easier. If anybody is interested they are pretty inexpensive and I could order several.
Can't tell you the secret bait I bought at Grande Bass . They have some pretty interesting soft plastic stuff.
I have also been looking at trying some swim baits. I was listening to one of the bass shows and they said that probably the next big bait craze, even here in the north, will be swim baits. Angler's Arsenal has some that I have been looking at. Have only bought one and that was last year and it's more of a big fluke than one of these imitation baits.
Well it's too darn hot today to work at the computer too long. Going to check out the movies at the theater. Don't forget if you need to see what's on the movies I have a number of theaters hot linked on the "Interesting Sites" button of the home page at teardropbass.com. I did it a few years ago because up at the cabin you have to buy several papers in order to see what's on at the movies. Watched "The Queen" last night on pay per view. Interesting look at Britain's royal family and it basically takes a look behind the Royal scene in the events surrounding Princess Diana's death. It was okay, but not really what I would call entertainment.

Well the Crystal article is up on the web site. I can't believe how much time it takes me putsin around trying to get the darn thing ready to post. Didn't help that I had 27,000 pages and windows opened and inadvertently closed the article without saving it when I was closing a bunch of windows. Had to retype most of it. Probably better the second time anyway. Then there is the proofing, which seems to go on forever, because I always seem to want to change, correct, or rephrase something. Each time I make a change I first have to save it to my web page folder then open my FTP protocol and upload it, then check it on the web page. I bet you are all feeling sorry for me and wanting to send money, so to keep from getting barraged with money envelopes I'll quit belly aching.
The other day I mentioned that my son Nick out in Tahoe had a band called Harms Way. Pretty proud of the boy. He works out there for Tahoe Dave's which is a big outfit in the Tahoe area. Nick's their IT guy. He is also my IT guy and has helped me, ( no has really done it himself) update the web page. He did the bass graphic and reset the whole page. He's going to help me set up so we can plug some short video clips in soon. He's pretty busy out there. The band plays often, he's a ball player, (He caught for Hudsonville and made the Jon Boss All Star Team. Mentioned that because I just saw that they were having this year's out at the White Caps park.) snow boarder, and throw work in there and it doesn't leave much time. You'll have to check his music out on their My Space web site at Harm's Way Rocks . They have a CD out and these are just a couple songs from it. My favorite song didn't make the web page. Nick's on vocals and bass, Eli is on the drums, and Josh plays lead guitar. Josh has some great guitar licks so give the songs a play. They'll grow on ya.
I was surfin' the net looking for links for the Crystal article and found an article about a guy that had a very lucky day fishing. Has to do with lost love. That is if you love your rods like most fisherman do. The last Tear Drop tournament on Duck Lake last year I lost two rods and reels. The handle of the net was underneath them on the deck and I stepped on the net end which is bowed and it flipped the rods out neat as you please. I never saw them go. Ron saw them as they dipped out of site. We GPS the spot and went on fishing hoping to come back later with an underwater camera and locate them, but we couldn't find them, too weedy. Check out this lucky angler's story.
Waiting to hear some of the reports from the BFL up on Burt and Mullet. I would guess it would take a five fish limit around 30 lbs. to win it. A few years ago we fished a Federation tournament up there and that's what it took then. I'll let you know here in the blog what I hear.
I talked to Dennis about the tournament stats and it seems Roseann Roseannadana is off BMX bike racing and took the laptop the stats are on with her. He said she should be home Sunday, so it looks like it will be Sunday night, Monday morning before the standings get updated on the web page.
Friday, June 15, 07
Good Morning! What's good about it you say? Well, like they say, "Every day above ground can't be all bad."
Talk to ole Donny last night. He's prefishing for an event this weekend on St. Clair. St. Clair opens for bass this weekend and up till now has been catch and release only. The Canadian side is still not open for bass. Don called me at about 10:00 pm last night as they were just putting up the boat and said they caught a ton of smallmouth. Said every where they stopped they caught fish in water three to nine feet deep. No behemoths, but a number in the 4 lb. class. There are several St. Clair tournaments for this opening weekend, and the pay outs look pretty good. If anyone is interested, I think Ron and I will be going over to St. Clair a little later this summer and it's always fun to have a number of boats go over. We can all fish the same general areas, especially if you have never been over there, or go our separate ways on the water, but in any case it's always a good time.
Road trippin' with friends can lead to memories that last a life time. When Ron and I are in the car on one of our many road trips we are usually jammin'. We both like music and don't care how bad the other guys sounds singing. Ron's pretty much just a country boy. Me, growing up with 3 boys, I have gotten to like about every genre out there. Not fond of rap, but I've been known to listen to a bit of it.
My son Nick, has a band called Harms Way, out in Lake Tahoe, CA. They have been playing gigs quite a bit in the Reno, Tahoe area. They only play music they write, no cover stuff, even though I always feel they should play a little to show off their skills with music that's familiar to people. They are really very good and have loads of potential. His music fits more in the metal genre, but I have grown partial to it and listen to it almost daily in my iTunes mixes. I listen to lots of music, one because I like it and two because I'm always on the look out for stuff I can use in my iMovies. Short bits of lead in music or theme music always makes the final movie that much better. If you make your own movies and or just want some good fishing songs make sure you check out Gary Shiebler whose band is called "The World's Greatest Fishing Band." This link isn't right to Gary's site, but it does let you listen to some of his music. He has a 4 CD set called, "Papa Was A Fishin' Man that I have and it's got some great songs on it.
One last thing I was going to talk about was a thread from greatlakesbass.com about caring for your boat. They were talking about using a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water to clean scum off the boat and to get the discoloration off the lower part of your motor. They say it really works and is cheap. I am going to try it out.

What a nice stretch of weather. It's been warm, but the humidity has been moderate so it's been bearable and actually nice. Beats snow by a long shot. Sitting on a bucket on hard water or on the butt seat of my Cat.... not much of a choice as to what I'd rather be doing.
Still no word from Dennis with the stats so as soon as I get them I can post the standings and finish the Crystal article. Dennis runs a golf course and he's been really busy. Long hours for him this time of year.
Been talking to a few folks and the bay looks like it ought to be getting primo soon. I am really trying this year to make the trip up there for a few days. Bought a truck camper just for such occasions and need to try it out.
Spent most of the day today running things down for a job application. Been retired for just one year and have trouble admitting it, but I miss the camaraderie that is part of the 9-5 scene. Going to apply for a one day a week consultant job. Ought to be able to handle one Monday then six Saturdays. Hard to say if they will be interested in me. I know from experience, that many of the postings you see are because of union regs. Even though they can't say, they already have in mind who they want.
Drove down to Kalamazoo today to pick up my granddaughter and had to make a slight detour over to D & R Sports Center to pick up some secret baits that are killers on Manistee. Plus, I plan on giving old Neon Leon a call to see if he will rat out some of his good spots if he's not fishing the tournament. I miss Neon Leon. He's one of the good guys you meet that make this fishing thing even sweeter.
At D&R, I bought some Flash-Trix by Basstrix. They are a very good looking drop shot bait. One of those baits that catch fisherman maybe, but the end cap where they were was very picked over so they must be selling them. Bought some three inch golden shiners. They are kind of pricey at $6.99 for ten of them, but boy they sure look good.
Been going to work the Reel Man into the blog for some time now so today's the day. The Reel Man is on the GLB forum, and he works for an outdoor shop in Indiana and believe me he is a reel expert. He reelly knows his stuff! I took all of my baitcasters and sent them to him this past winter. He had 5 of them back in three days. One took a little longer because we needed to order a set of new gears. What a difference a good cleaning makes! He gave me permission to print his email address and to post on the site a set of instructions that he uses for properly setting up a baitcaster. First of all here's Mr. David Valentine's, the Reel Man's email address: devalentine@auburngear.com
Here's his instructions for setting up a baitcaster properly. I know this may be old hat for some of you, "older than dirt guys," but I found it to be a good refresher.
Here is how I set up a reel: (this is how I explain it to the beginning bait cast fisherman that comes in the shop and doesn't know a thing, only that my Dad had one of those and it was nothing but trouble.)
1. Turn all the weights off.
2. Tie on the bait you're going to use.
3. Release the spool using the thumb bar. As the bait falls tighten the spool tension knob. The ideal fall is slow and even. This could take a few tries, but after you get use to it, it's a piece a cake.
4. Now, remove the reel side plate. This will expose the weights. Turn all the weights ON. The weights slow the spool helping to prevent or lessen professional overruns.
5. Cast the reel, don't expect distance. As you get better you turn off the weights - distance will increase.
6. When turning off the weights never have just 1 or 5 on, this will throw the spool out of balance. Always have the weights evenly spaced when turned on.
7. You can also back off the spool tension knob, but be careful you don't want a sloppy spool (side to side).
The big thing that aids distance is the rod. A fast tip is what you need, and as you know, the longer the rod the more distance. One thing that a lot of fisherman do is cast too hard, especially with spinning gear. They get the line whipping against the rod and loose distance. The main
thing is after you get the reel set you will still need to train the thumb, putting very very light pressure on the spool as it spins. Knowing when to stop the spool with your thumb will come from time on the water. The biggest advantage to the weights in the braking system is the ability to slow the spool's over running when you go from with the wind to against the wind (especially when using big bladed spinner baits) .
I highly recommend Dave and will be sending him all my reels for maintenance and repair.
Lastly, I forgot my cell phone up north so if you need to get a hold of me call my home phone or my wife's cell. Same prefix as mine but with the last 4 digits being 0932.
Crystal article will be up tomorrow with pics even if I don't get stats.

What beautiful weather! This is what summer is all about. Got up and walked around the yard before going to coffee and just tried to take in all of what Mother Nature is featuring.
Had coffee at the Na-Tah-Ka this morning. What can I say, I'm a social butterfly and like the banter that occurs at the various coffee stops. Saw Craig S. from the Tear Drop there and we talked about what a big weigh in there was at Crystal. Craig wondered if it was a record or not. Not quite sure. Once Dennis gets me the stats, (I'm waiting Dennis) I can take a gander and see how many fish and pounds of fish were caught.
Craig is looking for a boat in the $6,000 area if anyone knows of one for sale. He's got his eye on one up here and may take the dollar plunge.
Spent some time trying to get info. on a job in the Missaukee/Wexford Intermediate. They have a one day a week consultant position open. Had to type up a resume. Haven't done that in oh, probably 35 years. Have to do a little something until I qualify for Social Security, especially if I want to keep fishing. The gas bill for a fishing trip is really a royal pain. I figure it cost about $35 to drive to Crystal and back and probably another ten to fifteen bucks for boat gas. That is just for the tournament day and I drove up there and spent the day two other times to prefish.
Need a bio-diesel outboard. This past winter, at a conference in Ludington put on by the DNR, I heard what has been happening in that "green" area. The DNR has converted a number of their bigger research vessels to all bio-diesel: fuel, crankcase, and transmission fluids are now all bio in those vessels. They also said they spent last summer testing a 225 outboard that had been converted. Who knows what they will soon have. I do know it has to be better than the estimated 3 miles per gallon that older outboards like mine get, not to mention that I have to burn premium in it.
On a cost saving note, I did talk to Jerry this morning about using Skype . Skype is an internet phone service. If you haven't checked it out you need to. You can work on the computer and using the computer call and talk to someone on their home phone. There is a small charge for Skype out calls, but it's cheap. If the other party you are talking to, also has Skype, then it's free. You can also make video calls if you have a camera hooked up to your computer. The cameras you need for this are very inexpensive. If you do go that route check out, on the Skype site, which cameras that their site work best with. My two sisters, who would have to be considered almost computer illiterate, use it all the time to make video calls. It is especially nice if you know someone overseas. You can also buy, what amounts to an 800 line from Skype. I used one that I purchased for the 530 area code in California. With that purchased number, my boys out there could call me on my computer from any phone in that area code. Check it out, it may be something that can help you stay in touch and save a buck.
I said yesterday that the Crystal article would be up today, but I don't have the stats yet so it will be another day or so.
At Crystal, I talked Wes and Brian from Traverse City about when the Bays would be turning on with the spawn. They said the rule of thumb is Father's Day for East Bay and Fourth of July for West Bay. Should be getting close then. Going to try and make it up there this year.

Well, I'm cabin ready now, but $25 poorer. In order to work on the web site or add to the blog while on the road, or at the cabin, I had to download FETCH, a file transfer protocol, FTP, so that I can upload files to the server which hosts the site. Now I can use my wife's laptop to work wherever we can hook up to the internet. It is a bit tedious though, because at the cabin we just have dial-up and it took two hours to download FETCH. I also have to save all new material to a folder on her computer and then when I get home transfer them to the web page folder on my home computer.
Crystal, yesterday, was as I thought, almost dead on the spawn. Still fish moving up, but there were many fish on the beds. We had a limit early and spent most of the day trying to upgrade. We probably caught, 20 - 25 fish, and not one of them was under the legal limit. We were throwing back anything under 17 inches and had two fish at 17 that we needed to cull with a big mama. Didn't happen though and we ended up with 16 lbs. and change. Not good enough to get any money. I think we ended up in around 8th place, but moved in the top ten in the Classic standings.
Mieras and Swank won with 21 lbs. and 9 oz. Swank weighed a smallie in for big bass that went 5 lbs. 15 oz. There was another 5 lber. that was also weighed in with a slew of 4's. Just about every boat had a limit.
It was probably a perfect day for fishing. It was almost dead calm until noon. Then a slight breeze rippled the water a bit. Not anything like the two very windy days of prefishing.
I'll be working on the Crystal Lake article today. Should have it up tonight with pictures. Just waiting to have Dennis send me the weigh in results so I know exactly what the top five had for weight. Should have some better quality pics to put up. The Portage pictures were grainy because I had to take still shots from the video I shot because my still camera's batteries were dead.
Well have to get some cabin maintenance work done today so I'd better get going. Been messing with the computer for several hours now. Not too bad, because I had a new book to read while I waited for the dial-up to do its thing.

Getting ready to pack up to head up to the cabin to get the boat ready for Crystal. Got to put some new line on and tie on all the secret baits. Looks like the Vawter boys are going to stay up at the cabin along with my partner Ron. Was reading posts on GLB today and one dealt with what the necessary equipment you need on your boat to meet the state laws. The question on the site dealt with what "readily accessible" means. According to the law in boats over 16 feet long you need a throwable that is "readily accessible." If you don't want a hassle that means out on your deck and not stowed in a locker. Also it seems that you have to have visual distress signals, VDS, if you are on any of the Great Lakes or connected waters that are two miles wide or wider. Here's what the Michigan Boating Safety Handbook says: "The following combinations of signals are examples of VDSs that could be carried on board to satisfy U.S. Coast Guard requirements:
Three handheld red flares (day and night)
One handheld red flare and two red meteors (day and night)
One handheld orange smoke signal (day), two floating orange smoke signals (day), and one electric light (night only)
It is prohibited to display visual distress signals while on the water unless assistance is required to prevent immediate or potential danger to persons on board.
Make sure you spend some free reading time going over the handbook that the link above directs you to. It's always good to refresh your memory especially before you get a ticket on the water.
Talked to Rick Sr. the other day about his Minn Kota that he ripped the head off when the pull cord tangled around it while fishing on Crystal. He took it to Tom Soltow in Kingsley, MI 49649, street address, 119 E. Main St., P.O. Box 77. His business is called Trolling Motor Repair and it's in the laundromat building at that address. He is closed on Wednesdays. The phone number is 231-263-5998. Rick said he took his Ranger there and Tom had it fix within an hour and the price was right. He's an authorized Minn Kota and Cannon Service Center.

Couple of days away from the computer to go up to the cabin to prefish for Sunday's Crystal contest. We got to Crystal at about 9:00 am Wednesday and it was cold. I know cold is relative, but mid 40s this time of year is cold. The first thing we noticed was a vehicle with Chevy and FLW all over it and soon learned that one of our favorite pros was out on Crystal doing some filming. Kim Stricker was out in his boat that he uses on the FLW Trail and along with him was an additional camera boat. As we put in, we weren't sure who the pro was that was there so we motored down the South shore to where we could see them. As we got closer, I recognized Kim and shouted "Smallmouth Neighborhood." That was the title of his great DVD that we have linked on the web page and have given away at some of last year's Tear Drop events. We proceeded to chat a minute, but I didn't want to intrude upon them any more than I already had so we moved on to do some scouting. By the time we got fishing the wind had already picked up and was rockin the boat pretty good. We fished the windy shoreline and picked up a couple of fish before we decided to go to calmer water to look for bedded fish. We found and caught some of the fish we saw, but saw about an equal number of cruising fish which led us to believe that this was just the first move up for most of the spawners. We did not see or catch many big fish which again would indicate that the bucks were up getting beds ready to move females onto. We spent the day trying to GPS and note take on the spots we found and had a good day. On our way home we stopped to get a movie to watch and ran into Rick Sr. and Craig at the Na-Tah-Ka Corner Store. We chit chatted for about an hour and Nate and I headed back to eat and crash. We stayed up too late and had told Rick Sr. that we would meet him at Tiny's Bait Shop at 5:30 am to try and get to Crystal before the winds, which were to be even stronger Thursday really got bad. We were the first two boats there and again we headed to the windy shoreline. It was as windy as it had been at the end of the day Wednesday and as we attempted to hold our position we realize that the batteries didn't appear to have a strong charge despite the charger saying they were ready to go that morning. So, once again we headed for the calmer side of the lake. We tried to cover water looking for fish and found a limit or two. Even found some deeper. Nate had me feel one of the fish he had caught and it was very cold. The warmest water we found Thursday was 58 degrees. Wednesday we had found water temps at the surface to be about 61. I would think that Sunday ought to find boats all with limits and those that come across a couple of big fish to put in the sack will prevail. I would predict that the winner should have around 18 lbs. and depending on the weather a couple of pounds either way.
If you haven't had a chance to see Kim Stricker's Smallmouth Neighborhood, make sure you cut loose with a few dollars and buy it. You won't be disappointed. You can connect to his web site by clicking on the button that is on the main page of the Tear Drop web site. The one referring to "Smallmouth Addicts." He must have gotten some good footage on Crystal the two days we saw him. His DVD contains not only footage of him fishing and describing smallmouth tactics, but he has some fantastic underwater camera shots that are very unique. He had a diver in the water at Crystal as well. Kim fishes the FLW tour and you can follow his results on the FLW web site.
Got an email today from an acquaintance from GLB who we had a chance to meet at last year's Michigan B.A.S.S. State Championship in Saginaw. Blake sent me an email saying that he has about 50 Fish Hedz that he has from Save Phace, Sports Utility Mask . These normally cost between $60 and $80 and he is selling them for $50. If you're interested you can reach Blake at blakstr1@yahoo.com.
For those of you that have fished Crystal you know the downtown ramp is not a good one. Plan on bottoming out with your trailer. It helps to cock it a little when you pull in or take out. I did see that the DNR has plans for a new ramp. They have actually bought the property. If you want to check out an article on where they are at with the new ramp click on this Crystal Lake Ramp link.
Maybe you need some directions to the ramp. Beulah is north of Manistee/Bear Lake on 31. As you get to the outskirts of Beulah you will pass the McDonalds on the west side of the road (by the way it opens at 6:00 am). You will go up a good size hill with a light at the top. As you go down the road, 31, you will see a road that goes left about mid hill. Take it left and it will take you along the lake. You will pass a campground on the lake and then the swimming beach and then you will see the ramp at the end of Clark St. If you happen to miss the left mid hill like I always do then take turn right just after the Sheriff's Office on Highland. Turn left on Court and left under the big concrete bridge. Go straight until you hit the lake and turn right and you are a block from the ramp. If you come in from the north on 31 go into downtown and turn right on Clark St. and it's a short block to the lake. Not much parking available. If there isn't any parking on street near the ramp, go up Clark across the main drag and you will find a good size parking lot.
If you need an excuse to fish Crystal you can tell your significant other that they could stay at Crystal Mountain Ski Resort which now has a big new indoor water park to attract summer tourists. Crystal Mountain is just east of 31 on 115 a few miles east.
On a personal note, I felt quite honored today to be invited with my mother, brother and sisters to be guests at the ground breaking for the Donald K. Shine Wyoming Drinking Water Plant addition. My dad was hired to run the plant back in 1965. It is the third largest plant in the state behind Flint and Detroit. They're building to increase capacity from 90 million gallons a day to 120 million gallons a day. That's 1,400 gallons of water every second. A representative from the governors office, our Senator, State Representative, and many local dignitaries were there. We were happy to also see many old friends there, and to think I almost stayed up north because of gas prices. Glad I came back. It was a great time! I'm sure my dad was glad to see it through our eyes and feel the warmth of those there in our hearts. A big thank you to Joe Staphf, Director of Utilities and Jim Carrin, Plant Superintendent, for organizing the event. Hey Nick I got you one of the little golden shovel paper weights they gave us as a memento.

Looks like a Mr. Rogers day in the neighborhood today. Missed my haircut appointment this morning and had to reschedule. I hate that when it happens. Like all good anglers though I have an excuse. Dog sitting for my son's dog and took him on my walk this morning (He may be looking for a good home for a six month old Australian Heeler if anyone is interested.) and by the time I got back and showered and called Paul the Barberian to double check the appointment, I found out I was already late. (Dog gone good excuse). Got it changed to one o'clock and will have to stop at Ida's to get raisin cinnamon rolls to bring to Paul the Barberian's wife who works as his receptionist. She'll keep me in good graces with the "Barberian."
Listened to another Bass Edge podcast on the walk concerning jig fishing. They were talking about fishing Table Rock in the Elite Series and how it was going to be a deep water contest. When they were talking about line application for this technique it made me think of a comparison I saw this past winter concerning the various types of fluorocarbon .
I think I got this web site from a discussion on Dan Kimmel's Great Lakes Bass Forum . If you frequent forums this is a particularly good one and has a lot of great anglers on it with loads of good advice and help. I asked on the forum the other day for a Minn Kota repair number for a guy I heard about from Rick Sr. up in Kingsley. Within a short time one of the guys had it. Here it is the reply from the forum "The shop is called Trolling Motor Repair and the number is 231-263-5998, and he's very good." Just in case you rip the head off your Minn Kota like Rick did.
Well, got to go raid my old personnel file to get some info for a resume. This being retired stuff, I'm finding out, really means "short on money and long on time" so if I want to afford gas to go fishing I'm going to have to look for a part time job. Got a line on a consulting position from Ms. Fowler so I have to put together a resume. Haven't done one of those in oh, probably 35 years is all. Lots of help on the internet though. You can find anything on the world wide web, a.k.a., www. So for now, "Happy Trails to you until we meet again." Don't know where that came from, but I do miss Roy and Trigger.

What a crazy weather pattern! From sticky wet, to cold and wet and now just cold. 50 degrees or less tonight. Finally got the boat in the water for a test drive today. Took it over to Reeds Lake and dumped it in. Started and ran fine and put her up on plane and it looks like we are back in business! Now, if I find enough cans tonight, I might be able to fill it up. Gas at Cosco today was $3.49 for premium, $3.29 for regular.
Here's a web page that you can use to find the cheapest gas in your neck of the woods.
If all goes well I plan to be up on Crystal Wednesday and Thursday prefishing for Sunday's tournament. Should be a slugfest.
As the summer progresses, it's very important to take care of the fish you catch and place in your livewell. Many of us have given fish a ride, but how much do you know about the delayed mortality of those fish you keep for the weigh in. Here's one of the better web sites I found on fish care.
Fishing these smallies on the beds and over the sand a little later on involves throwing a lot of tubes. Here is one other web page I have run across that involves a simple little tube tool that helps you rig tube baits without having to retie each time.
Been looking around for some Nichols spinnerbaits. Bought three at the Outdoorsman to deliver to a buddy up north but couldn't find anymore in a half ounce at any shop here in GR. Was going to make a trip down to D&R in Kazoo, but it just didn't happen today. Called Pilgrim's Village and they only had one, although they were suppose to be getting more in this week. Been throwing some Booyahs and Strike King, but right now Nichols still are my favorite.

A gray, everything feels damp, kind of day today. Did get out to do my four and a half miles. Always find lots of reasons not to exercise, but once I make my mind up and lace the shoes the rest of the day is much better because of it. I always said the hardest part of running was tying your shoes. The decision to as Nike says, "Just Do it!" is the toughest part.
Got three reports from guys on Crystal. Needless to say they didn't go fishing they went catching. Here tell that Tim Shoup and Mike Miller went up to prefish today and some guys were having a small 10 boats or so tournament and they asked Mike and Tim if they wanted in for $40. They said yes and at the end of the day weighed over 20 lbs. with a 6.5 lb. smallie for big bass. They took all the money!! Don't mess with Tear Drop anglers is the lesson there I guess. Rick Sr. was up there as well and ripped the head off his trolling motor. He is in need of some Minn Kota repair. He had someone tell him that there is a guy in Kingsley who fixes them and he's going to try and get a hold of him and when he does I'll pass the info along. I do have addresses for several Minn Kota places:
Great Lakes Communication, 4970 W. River Dr., Comstock, MI 49431 616-647-9990
D & R Sports Center, 8178 W. Main St., Kalamazoo, MI 49009, 269-372-2277
Vern's Sport Shop, 827 Michigan Ave. West, Battle Creek, MI 49017, 269-964-2024
Coastline Power & Lighting, LLC., 8338 Anchor Bay Rd., Algonac, MI 49001 810-794-5951
You can go directly to Minn Kota and check for authorized dealers there as well.
Listened to another Bass Edge podcast on my walk/run today. They had one of the Elite pros on, Mark Tucker, and I picked up a couple of things. His preferred method of fishing is with a jig. He said that when fishing a jig you have to watch the moon cycle. When the moon is full, the fish come off the bottom and fishing a jig right on the bottom would therefore not be as productive as swimming a jig. He also said that he always uses braid on topwater. Never fluorocarbon because it's so stiff and sinks it kills the action. That's the second pro I have heard that said they have went to braid for topwater.
This Spring, at the Sport and RV show in downtown Grand Rapids, I listened to another pro Joe Balog. Picked up several things from him and also later found an article done by him on rough water boat rigging. It's definitely a good read with some good info.

Well didn't get the boat in the water yet. Always seems to be something, but spent the night in the ER. My mother-in-law has pneumonia so we took her in and she ended up spending the night in the hospital. Actually the pneumonia is getting better, but they were a little concerned of heart complications so they wanted to keep her to check things out further.
As I mentioned the other day we do have a "For Sale" page on the site and Steve just sold his boat on it. Marty has his Ranger yet for sale and there is Tom's Pantera there for sale as well. Tom is Lee's old partner and has fished some Tear Drop events years ago. I also put their boats on Craigs List. Craig's List is like an eBay site but local. There is no bidding it runs more like a garage sale site. You just email the party with an offer. There are more categories to peruse on Craig's List than just the "For Sale" one. In the discussion forums under "apple," I have gotten some very good tips and advice for use on my computer. Once you click on this Craig's list hot link and go to the page you will notice in the address bar that it says http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/. By moving over to the right and clicking on the state of Michigan you will see all the cities in the state that have Craig's Lists. Some of you will probably want the northern Michigan list etc. If you are vacationing it really comes in handy if you want to check out available lodging under "vacation rentals." I have bought a number of items big to small on Craigs List and have sold things on there as well. Putting ads in with pictures is quite straight forward. Check it out, I think you may get addicted to checking it like I have.
Went to the Outdoorsman yesterday to buy some spinnerbaits for a buddy up north. Talked to Bill and Grayson and had the wife with me so I didn't do my usual hanging out and shopping. If you stop in to Bill and Grayson's shop, you will want to try the donut shop right next to the Tai Food Restaurant just a few paces down the little strip mall. It's my favorite donut shop in town.
While we are on the subject of food we might as well check out this barbecue site.
All this food talk is making me want to go fishing. Better throw in a fishing site. Terminal tackle is always an item of discussion. Bought some "Hooks" from this site that seem to work very nicely. Ohio Pro Lures is another company that I order things from. Can't tell you which of their secret baits a few Tear Drop anglers get from this company, but they do and will be using them on Crystal.
Well off to go watch a District Final baseball game. Getting itchy to fish Crystal. Got a couple of reports yesterday and plan on trying to pick up pop cans to buy gas to get up there. Can't wait. Just 1057 more cans to find.

Got my boat back and hopefully it was a minor spark plug fowling problem and according to the mechanic he says it's running fine. Now, I'm the first to admit that I am totally incompetent when it comes to things mechanical. So, I'm always impressed by people like my friend Ron or my brother-in-law Neal who seem to be able to fix anything. They have the McGiver touch. Give them a pocket knife and they got the car door off and the window motor replaced. So this may not be a tip to most, but good to hear maybe anyway. When I drained my lower unit oil in preparation for the winter there were some metal shavings stuck to the magnet on the end of the plug. Now I have done this before with other outboards and there is usually always some shavings. However, how much is too much? Well I asked Ted at TLC Marine Service in Marne that question and he told me first and foremost you can lengthen your lower unit life by always, always, making sure you shift the boat into gear at a dead idle. When the engine is at it's idle speed shift firmly and quickly. I knew that part, but there have been times when I have had the engine running rough and I have hit the foot throttle and revved the engine and quickly dropped it into gear. A real no no according to Ted. I hope to take the boat somewhere today and drop it in some water and check it out. Don't usually put the boat in down here in GR so I may run to Reeds Lake or some place close to check it out.
You probably have a ton of web sites saved as your favorites as well as I and I thought I would start sharing my list. Here are four that you may want to check out.
"Lake Maps"
"Outdoorsman Pro Shop"
"Lake Erie Satellite Map"
"Car and Deep Cycle Battery FAQs"
"Bass Edge"
The link to the Outdoorsman just gives you another shop if you're not in the Grand Rapids area to check out when you are in town. If you live any where around GR you already know about it. Grayson, Bill, and Nate and the other guys there are quite helpful. They are also competitive with the big box stores. I bought my Minn Kota from them and they put it on the boat for me. They are also the people to see for electronics. As you might expect they have the stuff that serious outdoor people want for hunting and fishing.
The battery link may be a good one especially after fishing Portage Sunday. My buddy Don has an "on the go" charging system on his Bass Cat that is exceptional. I have fished with him many times and have seen how his awesome his Stealth Charging System is. There have been many days on bigger water like St. Clair or Saginaw Bay where you make some long runs that we never had to plug the boat in at the end of the day!
The Satellite link is one of many that are now out there and available. This Lake Erie view helps to see where the muddy water is. If you fish Erie you know that the direction of the wind determines where the mud will be and this view gives you a good idea of where not to be or how bad the water might be muddied. There is a Grand Traverse Bay buoy link under the 2006 Article button on the main page that will also lead you to more buoys. Good for wave height and temp.
The Bass Edge link takes you to their web page which has a lot of good information. I found Bass Edge though through the iTunes store. Been trying to loose some weight and so I've started walking 4 miles a day and I use my iPod. I love all kinds of music, but sometimes I'm not in the mood and would rather listen to a talk show. At the iTunes store there is a podcast section. There you can download for FREE about anything you are interested in. There are several bass fishing podcast shows by different people like Bob Pops or Bass Edge that really have some good info on. Bass Edge podcasts are about 30 to 50 minutes long. You can download them for freeeeee and listen to them on your MP3 player. I also have a FM transmitter that my iPod plugs in to in my truck so I can listen to them on the road. It's a Belkin product that I bought at Cosco and it works very well. In GR proper there are so many FM stations that the transmitter causes some static. You need to tune it to an FM channel and it is much clearer if that channel is as far as you can get it from an active station. On the road, that's not a problem especially when I'm north.

I would like to kick this new section off with a big thanks to my son Nick out in Tahoe, California for redesigning the web page and making everything work so slick. He's full of ideas and expertise and plans to jazz up the site even more. Thanks Nick!!
Well, what a time of year to be fishing. If you like to bed fish you are in heaven right now with some big fish moving up all the time. Last Sunday on Portage I did catch a couple fish off beds, but I would not say they had moved up in numbers yet and were on a prespawn mode. When I hobbled around in my trolling motor only mode on my half day of prefishing the largemouth were literally stacked up in the back canal. There were fish on beds every two feet for a 50 yard stretch. After that cold front and drop in temperature, they were gone on Sunday.
Was good to see everyone again! Lee is fishing this year and it's been a while since I have had a chance to talk with him. He's fishing with his lady friend who was so kind to pick my 50/50 ticket out. $40 helps pay for lawn mowing gas. I'm sure we could all rail about gas prices. My boat holds fifty gallons and I always put in premium.) Lee has been a long time supporter of the Tear Drop with an ad in the flyer for years. Check him out if you need auto parts at Ken's Auto Parts in Muskegon. There is a computer link in the "Interesting Sites" section of the web page and of course his ad is in the flyer.
If you didn't get a chance to talk to Gary and Dave a congratulations is certainly in order not only for their win Sunday, but they also took 12th in the Bass Cat Owner's Invitational down in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Mind you, they won the whole thing last year and a 12th this year! Whoa!! You also need to know there were 648 boats. That's right, 648!!! Maybe they have a picture they will email me and we'll put in on the news. If you didn't read the article about their big win last year it's under the 2006 article button on the main page.
Being retired means short on money long on time which means I'm excited to hear about there being an agreement that is close to being signed that would bring Cabella's to Walker in northwest Grand Rapids. I need a part time job or who knows maybe full time for a while. Now, when I mentioned this on a fishing forum, I got drilled with what opening the big box outdoor store may do to the local mom and pop places. I trade frequently in local shops and will continue, I'm sure, even when the big boy does arrive. Everybody has a niche to fill and there will always be room for those who specialize. Michigan needs to do all it can right now for the economy and that tourist dollar that Bass Pro and Cabella's brings.
If you are not too knowledgeable about the VHS threat please be sure to read up and do your part. There is a VHS button on the main page. As avid sports people we need to be in the fore front when issues like this present a threat to our outdoor passions.
Should have the article on Portage done today. Hope the pictures turn out ok. I ran out of battery on my pocket digital and will have to extract frames from the digital video footage. Because of the low res needed on the computer they should display fine. Just won't have any pictures to print. If you took some good pictures at the tourney email me some using the "Contact Us" button on the main page.
Reno sold his boat that he had for sale on the "For Sale" section of the web page. There are still two boats that are on there for sale so take a look and let people you know that they are available.
